The dramatic drops in the UK Base Rate that began in the autumn of 2008 affected the previously generous rates that had been on offer to savers. Yet the response has been a dramatic rise in the number of people taking out new savings products. Predominantly led by switching, it grew 24% between June 2008 and June 2009 to 5.8m people.
